For our purposes, the channel has two controlling documents, the Code of Conduct, which is about how we treat each other, and the Channel Guidelines, which concerns how we treat the channel. This document is the Channel Guidelines.
Below are the guidelines for #gaygeeks-asl regarding behavior and topics of discussion.
#gaygeeks-asl is generally not a very rules oriented channel. However, some general guidelines are in order so that everyone in the channel has a documented acceptable standard of behavior, and the tl;dr version is as follows:
- Don't be under 18, because it puts other people at risk,
- Don't be a dick, and
- Don't be disruptive, especially if people have asked you not to be.
- Don't be easily offended; channel is for adult conversation and free expression.
- Furry discussions are fine, zoophilia is NOT okay.
Most people in the channel have probably never read these guidelines and that's OK because they're what most would call common sense. Writing them out helps avoid problems later though. There is no controlling overlord. Most people also probably have no idea who "controls" the channel, because there's little "official" action in the channel other than kicking trolls once in a while. The main focus is on privacy and non-consensual abusive behavior. And if you're under 18, you can't join the channel even if you're of legal age where you are located. Sorry, but we had to pick an age that keeps the channel members and the IRC network out of trouble, both of which exist in many places around the world.
These guidelines are not set in stone and subject to discussion. After making sure you've read note 1 below, Feel free to private message one of the channel ops anytime to discuss them or send mail to the channel contact address. Please note you may not get an immediate response on IRC, and if you don't hear back for longer than two days, you should try again or send mail.
- Minimum Age: The consensus of the people inhabiting #gaygeeks-asl is that you need to be at least 18 years old to be in this channel.
- If you turn up in the channel claiming to be younger than 18, you will be required to show proof of age to a channel op in order to remain, and you have to refrain from claiming to be younger than 18 again.
- You must be of legal age where you live, and where you're IRCing from.
- General: #gaygeeks is generally comprised of work safe discussions. #gaygeeks-asl is for the non-work safe (NSFW) discussions. You can discuss work-safe topics in #gaygeeks-asl, but it was created specifically to keep non-work safe discussion out of #gaygeeks. The others in the channel may become irritated if the discussion skews toward discussion that could take place in #gaygeeks.
- No Abusive Behavior or Gawking:
- No Abuse: No racism, sexism, or abuse of others in the channel.
- No Use/Threat of Violence/Harm: No discussion that involves actions taken against another person against their will. This wording is intended to forbid threats and violence against others, while allowing for BDSM chat among consenting persons of legal age. Please use common sense.
- No Gawking: You must be heteroflexible, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, or questioning. If you're genuinely participating, welcome. If you're here to gawk, you'll be kickbanned. For example, if you consider yourself straight and have no "interest" in persons of the same gender, then you don't belong in #gaygeeks-asl . Nothing personal. We don't approve of gawking at heterosexuals in their asl channels either.
- No Disruptive Behavior: Do not interfere with the ability of others to maintain a civil conversation. This includes repeated help-seeking denial, yelling at people, and persistent attention-seeking behaviour.
- Privacy: You are expected to maintain the privacy of those in the channel.
- No Outings: Never "out" channel members elsewhere without their permission. (Anyone in the channel is by definition not strictly heterosexual or is violating the guidelines) This includes outing them in #gaygeeks , which is not just LGBTQ people. The "secret" flag is set on #gaygeeks-asl , while #gaygeeks is a public channel. You may also want to turn on the "invisible" flag to hide your presence in the channel from others on Freenode who are not also in the channel.
- No Logging: Logging this channel is absolutely forbidden. To be clear, if your logs turn up somewhere (email, web, etc.) you've broken this rule. If you paste a link in #gaygeeks-asl to your logs of this channel you've still broken this rule. This does not however mean you can't paste some quoted lines back into the channel, it just means that privacy of channel members is paramount, and any time someone who wasn't in the channel can possibly obtain a record of it, the "No Logging Rule" has been broken. The existence of the URL to any logs of this channel counts as public disclosure. Logs passed to a channel op under their specific request and in the manner requested, for the purpose of enforcing these guidelines or the rules of Freenode does not qualify as a violation.
- No Disclosure of Confidential Information: Obviously there may be exceptions in the case where someone may be harmed, but this is the sort of thing you should discuss with a channel operator rather than taking matters in your own hands.
Most of all, have fun. Enjoy each other's company.
